“I feel like TikTok just put the gun in his hand and told him to pull the trigger.”
This is a line from “Can’t Look Away,” a documentary about the dark side of social media and its impact on youth addiction and suicide that will be shown in a free, public screening from 5-7:30 p.m. June 25 at the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.

Following the screening, a discussion will explore the science, ethics and emotional realities surrounding screentime, youth mental health and digital safety, and how to help develop healthy, social media habits, especially in children and teens.
An introduction to the film will begin at 5:30 p.m., followed by the film screening from 5:45-7 p.m. and discussion from 7-7:30 p.m. It takes place in Room 2120 A and B in the Jacobs School, 955 Main St, Buffalo.
The discussion will be led by Sourav Sengupta, associate professor of psychiatry in the Jacobs School and child and adolescent psychiatrist with UBMD Psychiatry, and Jacobs School alumnus Ben Rein, a neuroscientist and science communicator.
The event is being sponsored by Community Health Speaks, an initiative that aims to bridge the divide between the scientific community and those from historically marginalized communities.
